Lagenlook, revisited...

There has been a lot of posting on Stitchers' Guild, lately, about Lagenlook, a European-style way of layering clothing and accessories. Until I decided to concentrate on more body-conscious clothing at the beginning of this year, I used to dress occasionally in a Lagenlook style; actually, I've been doing it for over twenty years. We have a special store in Santa Barbara, Tienda Ho, and in times past, I dropped a lot of clothing allowance there!

I recently bought the "Anti-Suit" designed by one of my favorite alternative designers, Kalyiana, to revisit the look and see what I thought.
I just got back from a party where I wore this, and these are my conclusions:

1. Big tops and big bottoms make me feel...BIG
2. The fabrics and construction of these items are very high quality...outstandingly comfortable
3. I look forward to wearing the tops over slim pants, and the pants with a closer fitting top
4. Proportion is CRITICAL

I  did have a chance to wear my favorite Trippen Geisha Boots
accessorized (secretly) with polka dot socks...
So, while I'm sure I'll wear these pieces often, it will be separately, with a view to keeping the
proportions attractive...

  1. I agree. All the pieces are lovely but seem to overwhelm you all worn together. I hope you post some pics of the "new and improved" combos.

  2. I think this looks great and you still look like a tiny slim person to me BUT it will be interesting to see the other combos and I'll definitely be looking for them!

  3. I agree, Margy. These are fabulous looking pieces, but I think they would look even better on you if you mixed them up a bit more. But you still look pretty darned fabulous!

  4. Beautiful pieces, and especially the white shirt! I love that shirt. You have such a refined sense of style that I am sure you will enjoy mixing this up a bit and finding even more ways to look fab. I have accidentally done a lagenlook style when draping layers on myself trying to stay warm in the travel trailer :-)

    1. Thank you, Mary...can we see pictures of your "accidental lagenlook"?

  6. Have to agree with the others - but beautiful pieces and you wear them well, regardless of the proportions. I love the white top. Reminds me of the SW liberty a bit.

  7. You nailed it! Big on the top and big on the bottom does not work as well as the small/big or big/small proportion....even for rubenesque women. Your photos are great, they tell the tale of this look on tall slim Margy. Thank for this and all your posts, I am a fan!

  8. I love your new suit. There is nothing wrong with the illusion of more Margy, but I'm sure you are right about mixing the proportions. For the vertically challenged like me, however, lagenlook is pretty much just for looking at, so keep modeling it for us.
BTW, thanks for the link to Tienda Ho. I think learning about that store (less than 2 hours from here) will change my life! Soon I'll be stylish, cosmopolitan and bankrupt.

  9. I love Lagen, Tienda Ho, and Sunheart. With this look, balance and scale is everything.

  10. It's an interesting concept. I like these colours on you.
I can't wear unstructured clothes without looking like a school girl - but then that could be a good thing:)

  11. Wow, I was thinking you looked awfully good in the full-on lagenwear! I will do like you are talking about, and mix wide with narrow. Wide all over is a look not all of us can pull off, but it looks like you could if you wanted to!

  12. Hey Margy - I agree with you - if you wear the entire 'look' it makes you look BIG! I don't need to look bigger than I am already. I look at the pics that Katie Koos posts and wonder how anyone under 6'2" and 102 lbs could ever were her combinations. I agree I like the big shirt/vest over slim pants or leggings - and you have great legs! I own those same socks, I just want to Trippens too.

  13. Thanks, Reann...you notice KK never shows her combos on a person...just a skinny hanger!

  14. Margy..you are the "coolest" most chic lady ! You know what works for you and are consistent in creating "your" look. I love reading your blog and seeing what you have newly created. Your travel wardrobe which you created for your recent trip was fabulous. You wear everything well..I think I like the slim pants with a bit of volume on the top best. You spent time working on a beautifully fitting pair of pants..and wear them so well.

  15. I think you've come to the right conclusion as to proportions. You have such wonderful style, and the pieces you've made and combined with purchased pieces are just outstanding - and uniquely you! Can't wait to see what combos you come up with.

PS...The geisha shoes just crack me up! I love that you can get away with these - because on you, they look just perfect!

  16. Margy - I love the pieces individually, and I'm sure you'll come up with some great combinations that you are more comfortable with. You have a great sense of style. And I LOVE your socks :)

  17. At last I know there is a NAME for this look . I AGREE that proportion is critical . I would love to know more about these proportion "rules"

    1. I'm not exactly a rule-follower, mem! I just know what looks best on ME. Usually, unless you are doing full-on Lagenlook, it's bigger tops with narrower bottoms, or visa versa.

  18. Margy,
You have such a great sense of style. I used to do the Lagenlook thing too until I slimmed down. I love the pieces, especially the shirt, but I like the formula; one big, one slim the best.

  20. I have really enjoyed watching you move towards more fitted garments. While your shape and posture allow you to wear anything, I think you look much slimmer and more confident (not hiding behind the clothes) when the fit is closer to your body. The things you make and your style are very inspiring.

  23. Big tops with skinny pants, big pants with fitted tops. Having said that I love the pieces you've made.
