STRIPES, DOTS AND FLORALS!

Yes, I said FLORALS... I decided to join the trend of floral pants before it
passed me by. I couldn't find any apparel fabrics I liked, so I jumped over to home dec sites and found what I wanted at Online Fabric Store

I used my trusty Lynda Maynard pattern, making them ankle length.

I was afraid they might be a little too splashy, but I think I like them and they
feel very summery.

The stripes are in a pair of pants designed by Marcy Tilton, V8929, and the fabric is also from her.

The fabric is a real workhorse, a black/gray/silver stretch cotton and the seaming on the pattern is very interesting.

The dots are left over from my V1385 jacket; I was intrigued with Shams'
Print Block Tee on Communing with Fabric, so I rummaged in my scrap pile
and made this (V9004)

This fabric is a jacquard, so both sides are usable. I didn't have enough for the sleeves and back, so I used a black crepe and lengthened the sleeves.

Excuse the headless shots...

In other news, I celebrated a birthday with 3 very dear, very long-time friends

and had visits from a daughter, teen-aged granddaughter and her friend. Also a niece stopped by on her way to pick up her son after his first year at UCSB...(University of California at Santa Barbara). Our guest house has seen a lot of traffic lately!

At some point, we were visited by the resident skunk family, who stopped by for
a bite to eat...we DO live in the country, and they ARE black and white...

I hope your summer is proceeding with joy...

Catch me on Visible Monday, where Patti makes sure we have a place to be visible!

  1. It appears that your skunk family is giving you the Stinky Salute...hope you came away unscathed! I love those floral pants; the print looks almost vintage.

  2. Although the floral is different for you, I really like them! What a great ideal to use upholstery fabric. The print is more elegant than what you'd find in garment fabric in my opinion.

  4. I have that top pattern and I should really make it up! It looks great on you. I love how you mixed your prints. I am not a fan of The Tilton's pants patterns, but these look really good on you. I like the gray and black stripes. Duh.

  9. You make the most beautiful clothes. Love those floral pants. I was deciding on whether or not to make a pair and after seeing yours I am going to a pair cut out and sewn before the summer is over.

  10. It took me awhile to make it over here today, but I'm glad I did! On SG, I couldn't see the stripes in the pants - they look great! Those floral pants are so much fun! And I really love what you did with the scraps from the Betzina jacket. It looks so chic and I like it with solid black sleeves. Gorgeous!

Don't you just want to give those little skunks a hug? They are so cute. And they're part of your tribe...the black and whites.

  21. Happy belated birthday!!! You look fabulous in all of your garments, but I must say that the asymmetric top and the striped pants are particularly stunning.

OMG, the skunk photo stopped me dead - isn't that the position right before striking? And 3 of them poised at once?!

  22. Just the right floral print; lovely on those pair of pants! Margy, I don't know you personally, but your blog always inspires.

  23. Happy birthday! If we keep sewing and styling, we never get old. Love your new pieces, esp the pants. A mother skunk and her babies used to hang around at night at the University of Texas Balcones Research Center when I was a student. They eat the insects that were attracted by to the lights. Just don't get close and startle them like one of the night guards did LOL.

  24. Always such fun to see what you've been sewing :) So you used home decor fabric? Did you pre-wash or do you plan to dry clean these? Just wondering as I picked up some great looking fabric for a skirt and am not sure how to proceed :)

  26. Happy Birthday Margy! I love those floral pants. It is great to use decorating fabric sometimes for a real statement.

  27. Love your fabric choice for the floral pants. I also have a hard time finding patterns I like. Right now I have three patterns I want to make but am lost in a sea of ugly patterns. I didn't realize when I started sewing just a few months ago that I'd have such a hard time at the fabric stores. I'll try that web site you mention.....

  28. Fab pants - so you! I often make clothes from furnishing fabrics as there are more curtain (drape) shops round here than honest to goodness fabric shops.

  29. Great job on both pairs of pants, Margie. I can see the stripes on the Tilton pair much better in your 'blog post than in your post over on Stitcher's Guild. It's a great design, the way the styling is made to show off stripes.

I love the fact that you honored that wonderful ikat fabric by using up every molecule of it. Very nice top indeed.

And finally, those skunks might be a bit envious of your wardrobe. Not a red accessory in sight on those little guys. : )

  30. I love the black and white top. I've recently ordered the pattern, so feel my choice is vindicated by your design aesthetic.
