THE TURKEY, THE RUANA AND ME...

Thanksgiving was lovely, with DD and DSIL here, just the two of them, for a lovely, relaxing holiday. The turkey was not so lovely...after more than 50 years of cooking a turkey, I UNDERCOOKED the bird...and my capitulation to Dave's wish for sweet potatoes with marshmallows (his memories, not mine!) was also less than stellar. Luckily I was so exhausted that it didn't bother me (much). Maggie and David made side dishes and Dave made pies...those were GOOD!

I have had a wonderful piece of felted wool from Emma One Sock for at least two years...it's quite heavy, a felted gray knit with fabulous black nubs...

It has a great selvage, too, that wanted to be used. I made a ruana this last
week...so easy that I didn't even use a pattern. I had to make a seam down the back so that I could utilize the selvages...

Notice the mirrors hanging from the eucalyptus tree...these pre-date the wedding mirrors-in-the-oak-tree by 15 years...also, notice the branch-coming-
out-of-the-head in most of these pictures...the photographer (that would be
moi) forgot to check the pictures and then was too lazy to reshoot... it's 76º
outside right now, so a heavy wrap like this one isn't comfortable for too long.
It's supposed to get down in the high 20's - low 30's at night, next week, so maybe I can wear it soon.

I'm sure it will be a surprise to many that Paddywack matches the colors of the
ruana...or vice versa...

I am participating in both Visible Monday, with the fabulous Patti from Not Dead Yet Style and in December Hat Attack with the equally fabulous Judith from
Style Crone. How lovely of these women to give us an opportunity to "show
off"!

I am still working on my Super Secret knock-off and it has been a godsend this
week; a very dear friend is going through an unspeakable tragedy and any
project I can do to divert my pain for her is welcome. She has no such diversion. Hug your loved ones tight and tell them how much you love them.
Tell them NOW.

Till later...

  5. That fabric is too fantastic! And to be able to use it as a cape with no sew? How perfect!

  6. Wow, what a fabulous poncho/cape! I have a fabric in the same pattern but much thinner (I made few skirts out of it), you look fabulous and very stylish!

    Hugs, Beata xx

  7. How wonderful to use that fabric for this gorgeous wrap, Margy. You look terrific, and I always enjoy seeing your talent on display. Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday!

  8. Your Ruana is unbelievably beautiful....I wish I had something exactly like it (though wearing it would be tough...I'm a few hours south of you and it never gets very chilly here! But i'd definitely find a way!)

It's heartbreaking to hear of the awfulness...I don't even have words to offer except that I'm glad you are finding your way through it.

    Bloody birds...what a drag!!!!!

  9. Ah, the enigmatical ruana... I didn't even know that word, shameful. I long to see you fling that ruana over your shoulder with grand drama. A gorgeous piece worn fabulously. I would like to buy some fabric that has selvages on every side in pre-ordered shapes.
You are so right about seizing the day.

  10. I have that fabic! Also purchased about 2 years ago but my colorway is a lighter gray with cream nubbies. I bought it to do Katherine Tilton's V8778. I even found coordinating gray sweater knit ribbing for the sleeves. Now once I take my hat-making class in January - and get this top made - we can be matchie-matchie the next time I'm out your way.

Happy holidays dear friend - sorry to miss you mid-December but have a fabulous trip!

  16. So sorry to hear that your friend has been dealt a tragic blow...although unable to be buffered from pain, I'm sure she is grateful for your friendship.

Your wrap is so authentically Andes looking. After a second look, I think the hat really adds to the overall ah-mazingness of the outfit...and coordinating with the family four legged love is always a good thing...at least some of the pet hair will blend in, yes?

Weirdly, we had an underdone turkey this year too...a first time for everything, I guess. Fortunately, we had a delicious salad that we served as a starter...and pie. Pie fixes everything!

  17. Prayers for your friend, Margy...

Beautiful wrap, and what fabulous fabric! Enjoy :)

Our Thanksgiving dinner in the mountain turned out just perfect! 4" inches of fluffy white snow, wonderful food and family present, and waaay too much football!

  18. Oh cute doggie! I have a mini-schnauzer + cocker spaniel mix. See my page on About / Contact to see a darling pic of her. I love this cape. It is very unique!

  19. Oh, that ruana is quite captivating. I simply want to wrap myself right up in it. And, you are so correct, pie seems to make every situation just a little bit better.

  20. The ruana is beautifully dramatic and will be an appreciated layer as the colder temperatures arrive. Your hat is the perfect topper to this glorious ensemble. Thank you for linking to Hat Attack!

Yes, I agree. This moment is all that we really have.

  22. Love the fabric of your ruana...and happy to hear that the pies were fabulous...because...isn't that what Thanksgiving is all about (said the non-turkey eater)?
Hugs to you and your friend... :(

  23. Lovely thoughts for your friend's loss ... your advice is unimpeachable! Pretty ruana ... is that what they're called then? I always wondered ... I have two, but not as beautiful as yours with you in it. Good to know You're looking lovely ... of course we dress to go with our dogs.
So much better to undercook than over! I don't hate mistakes that I can fix!

  24. Pretty much whatever you make I like.

  25. I love your ruana ... and of course how you styled it to perfection! I am sure I must find some treasured fabric and make myself one! When I was in high school ... many, many moons ago ... my family owned a fabric store and I sewed the displays. This simple, yet stunning piece is just the project I need to pull our my machine again!

As always my dear, thank you for the inspiration!

Much love sent to you and your dear friend.

    xoxo
