Playing with Proportion

Remember this?
Well, it's been bugging me! So after I took photos of my new tunic and leggings (at the end of the post), I decided to play with the various pieces of this "Anti- Suit"; I like the pieces separately, and I needed to justify the price I paid!

I think the blouse was everyone's favorite, including mine...here it is open, with narrow pants. Much better! The only problem I have with it is that the collar, cuffs and front band should have been interfaced with some of Pam Erny's Shirt Crisp Interfacing. I always use this in my shirts...you need some crispness to make the collar and cuffs stand up.
Here it is, belted...another good look, again, with the narrow pants.
Next, the jacket...(lightened to show details...)

over polka-dot narrow pants...and the fuller pants
with the top tied in the back, so it's not so big.
I feel much better, now, knowing that all three pieces will have a place in my wardrobe!

I made another M6607 out of a wonderful French double knit from Emma One Sock
and I also made FIVE pair of leggings/narrow pants...I started out with Christine Jonson's BaseWear One, but I don't like to wear my leggings quite so form fitting, so I fooled with the pattern several times, and finally measured my very favorite RTW pants, Eileen Fisher's Washable Stretch Crepe Ankle Pants (I'm wearing them above with the tunic) every four inches from hem to crotch, and made my own "Frankenpattern". I can cut them out and sew them in under an hour...YAY!
From the left...gray with silver pin dots, black and white polka dots, both cotton/lycra from eBay, and Marcy Tilton's black and gray "Rocket Man" rayon/lycra. Numbers 1 and 2 didn't make the cut!
Off to make a test jacket for my fancy Shams-bought brocade...

Several people have asked about the scarf/necklace I'm wearing in a few pictures...
It's raw edged striped knit strips...very lightweight and soft...wonderful for travel, too!

  1. Such a bounty of goodness, Margy! This could have been several posts. :)

I love your suit worn separately. I particularly love the top worn as a jacket. Too bad about the lack of interfacing, but I wonder if you can "patch" it somehow.

Your new tunic is gorgeous and I can't wait to sew my fabric up like that. :) And I love your fun leggings. I just finished a pair of fun stretch woven pants I haven't posted yet, but you have inspired me to look through my knit stash.

The bottom line is you look gorgeous in all of your outfits!

  2. By the way, what a super fun necklace in your belted white top pic! It looks like silver Christmas ornaments strung together!

  3. I like all these looks and proportions much better. Great accessories. Now YOU are the star!

  4. This is so interesting and you were right, you look much more petite with at least one "close to the body" piece. You've done a wonderful job of styling each piece so you have a mini-wardrobe that looks great for this season----bet you'll be adding a touch of red next? You and Shams have almost convinced me to try some narrow pants myself though I'm the queen of baggy!

  5. Very pretty, elegant looks you've created, all of them surpassing their "parent" garments! That song from the '50s -- "You-oo-oov got....the magic touch..." could have been written with you in mind. I echo Shams' thoughts on the silvery necklace, and other accessory choices you've made. They're fun and add so much to the total effect.

  6. Yes, I do like how you've styled everything with a combinations of voluminous and closer to the body looks.

  7. I think you must mean the black/white stripe...its unhemmed strips of black and white stripe knit, gathered together in two places...

  8. Margy, if you like a smaller overall look, you could belt the white shirt in the first pic and wear all your pieces together. That would look great also, IMO.

  15. I swear you are the best at taking a few pieces and making them look like a thousand. Great combinations. You always look so chic and lovely regardless of the proportions.

  17. Fabulous when mixed with the skinny pants, and then with a pair of loose trousers. I love these looks and am off to sew something after drooling over your wardrobe.

  18. Even though you think you look big in the original ensemble you still look so stylish, however all the other ensembles you have put together look great too.

I love the new pieces including the slim pants, however I wish I was slim enough to wear some (hopefully soon).

Your scarf - did you make it & if yes how - love it.

  19. Margy-
Love your playing with proportion! I once went down that road a few years ago. Love the black and white striped jersey necklace . Can you give few more specifics? I specifically would like to know the approximate length and how they are intertwined. Thanks!

  20. Oooo! Love the way you've re-proportioned everything! Much more flattering for your figure :) Love the leggings, too - great idea to copy your favorite leggings and make a pattern. Very smart!

I'm such a fan of your style! It's marvelous!

  21. Obviously the secret is not to wear all the baggy items together! I've been taking that advice myself lately and am much happier with several wardrobe pieces. So really, Margy, you ought to be the one styling the photos on pattern envelopes. Your versions of M6607 are far superior!

  22. I love your latest outfits! They look fantastic on you. I too am becoming a big fan of the narrow pant - they are very versatile. Great necklaces!!

  23. I love your work so much. I've looked at the Anti-suit so many times with intentions of making my own. Hopefully right after the first of the year. All your pieces are so cool. Love the pants love your creative mixing and matching. As mentioned before you could also try a third color in the mix such as yellow or even soft pink...Great fun.

  25. Always love your outfits. The slim pants are lovely. Can you share how you made the black/white striped necklace?

  26. I love the layering, but I agree: it must be done with caution! Too many big looks just make me feel big all over. These outfits look so much better with the narrow pants. Wonderful that you could just whip up 3 new pair so quickly!

  27. Great post, Margy! I enjoyed seeing how you put these outfits together.

  28. I have learned so much about putting color and proportion together from you. Thanks so much for your wonderful blog!

  32. I absolutely love this anti-suit and the ways in which you swapped it out with other items in your gorgeous wardrobe! I love the knit necklace but am crazy over the bauble necklace that you are wearing in the 3rd image (it's a large silver looking beauty). Would you share more details about that piece?

    1. Thanks, Beth. That necklace was an inexpensive piece from a shop (Natasha) in Santa Barbara.
It's made in India, quite lightweight, not particularly well made, but great fun to wear. It was OOAK in that store, and I bought it several years ago. Glad you like it!
